Matte Black is a bold and straight forward movement of timeless pieces ranging from their essential blacks of fall, to their classic safari styles of spring 2007. A sense of security and stability are conveyed in the strength of their designs, which lean towards a monochromatic euro-Bond minimalism. Created for the individualist who shuns disposable fashion, Matte Black produces lines with strong tailoring, timeless prints, and top notch quality.
Matte Black is owned by the Wignall family and creatively driven by Paul and Matt.
Paul Wignall has been involved in the fashion industry since about 2000 when he was booked by Mario Testino and Tom Ford as the face of Gucci. Following this, Paul became one of the worlds top models appearing in campaigns for almost every major designer and working with photographers like Helmut Newton, Stephen Meisel and Patrick Demarchelier. A complex and athletic individual, he is also a world class rock climber, having climbed around the world with the likes of Leo Houlding, John Dicky, Jason "Singer" Smith and Aaron Martin. Paul is now living in Los Angeles and working full time on designing Matte Black.
Matt Wignall's background and expertise are in fine art photography. He grew up in California where he gravitated more towards French surrealists and freethinkers than MTV. Being influenced by the images of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Helmut Newton and Sam Haskins, Matt has pursued a life long passion and career in fine art and editorial photography. He currently shoots all the creative for Initium Eyewear and the Volcom Girls line. Matt splits his time between Los Angeles and Mal Pais, Costa Rica. He and Paul have been collaborating on Matte Black clothing for almost 2 years.
